Wine of the Week - L'Erta di Radda Chianti Classico 2021

Wine of the Week - L'Erta di Radda Chianti Classico 2021

The small town of Radda in Chianti, in the Tuscan hills of Italy is the site of this week’s Wine of the Week.

Once the capital of the Chianti region due to its positioning between Gaiole and Castellina, Radda is famed for its rolling hills, stunning scenery and of course pristine wines. All three of these are encapsulated in the work of Diego Finocchi at L’Erta di Radda, which loosely translates to ‘The steep slopes of Radda’ (see the picture below!).

At the age of 24, Diego took a punt and bought 5 hectares of a small vineyard next door to the famous Montevertine winery and took a great step towards his dream of becoming a winemaker. In 2009, Diego achieved this dream by began producing his own Chianti Classico. Following Diego's great respect for the land and environment which supports him and his family, vintage at L'Erta di Radda is done completely manually and the farming is totally organic. Diego's hard work hasn't gone unnoticed having been featured in the Washington Post with the 2017 vintage.

This certified organic Chianti Classico consists of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo with the two grape varieties growing within the same vineyard. The nose is full of red cherry and plums, some flint, tobacco and a touch of sandalwood. It is a medium-bodied chianti yet on the palate the tannins remain smooth with good length. The wine presents an immaculate example of a juicy, low intervention, artisanal Chianti Classico.

With the 2021 vintage, Diego is now a double winner of the prestigious Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri award having also won it for the 2019 vintage.

This wine generally retails at a bargain price of £19.95. With your wine of the week discount, it’ll be falling off the shelf at £15.96, not to mention if you get it in a dozen.
