Wine of the Week - Clos I Terrasses, Laurel, 2013

Clos I Terrasses, ‘Laurel’, Priorat, 2013

Clos I Terrasses has become the stuff of legend and now perhaps reaches its most legendary status as being our Wine of the Week.

On an afternoon stroll in the hills of Spain’s then largely unknown Priorat region, Daphne Glorian was taking a walk with two of her oldest friends. As often happens, the subject of wine came up and in a moment of inspiration, Daphne looked around her and thought what a fantastic place for a vineyard. This might have had something to do with the stunning views of Priorat, or the fact that her two friends were the great winemakers Alvaro Palacios and Rene Barbier, but we’ll never know.

Since then the wines of Priorat have become world renown with Clos I Terrasses  being among the producers firmly leading the way.

The area is around 2 hours drive west from Barcelona and largely constitutes the valley and surrounds between the towns of Siurana and Montsant. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes and with the soils being volcanic red and black slate, the roots are forced to dig deep to reach sufficient water. This contributes not only to the high quality of the grapes but also helps to anchor the crops from the occasional storms that roll through the region. Hot, dry summers and cold frost winters, its climate is extremely testing, producing wines that are extremely tasty (you’re welcome).

The colour is brilliant ruby with aromas of heady, mineral-laced candied red fruit, Indian spices and rose pastille. Juicy and incisive on the palate, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavours that gain sweetness and spiciness in the glass. It packs a punch but comes off with great precision, alluring sweetness and a touch of candied rose on the gently tannic finish. This suave wine was aged in a combination of French oak tanks, barrels and clay amphoras for 18 months.

The ‘Laurel’ is Clos I Terrasses’s second wine but you wouldn’t know it based on its own standout quality. It’s only when looking to their first and famed Erasmus wine with its current market price of £600/bottle for the 2013 vintage that you realise what extreme value this wine holds.
