Wine of the Week - Benito Escudero Cava Brut Nature NV

Benito Escudero Cava Brut Nature NV

The last time we had a Wine of the Week it was late February: the flowers were peeping their floral heads and the promise of a short Spring and early Summer was tantalising. It is now early April and while sprouts of warmth have shown themselves through cracks in the clouds, we soldier on. But it IS coming and nothing brings the warm weather on like a bottle of Spanish Cava; luckily that’s just what we’ve got in store for our Wine of the Week.

This is one of our new arrivals from the Escudero Family. Back in 1852, a young Juan Escudero started making wine in a cave dug out of the mountains near the small village of Grávalos. Now, four generations of Escuderos later, the family continue his legacy with a tireless effort and respect for tradition, nature and good wine.

Benito Escudero, who took over the reins in the 1950s, had travelled and worked in Bordeaux and Champagne and studied what made some of the great French houses tick. Returning home he followed the traditional method Champenoise and developed his own Cava before going on to be one of the founders of the D.O. Cava classification.

This Cava Brut Nature is made with 100% Viura grapes, grown in the foothills south of Monte Yerga at an altitude between 700-800 metres above sea level. The high altitude contributes to the wine having fresh and elegant aromas alongside a low alcohol content. The nose has a strong apple aroma with a touch of lemon while the well integrated bubbles and acid line holds the palate together.

On our shelves at a delectable £21.95, with your Wine of the Week discount it is an absolute cracker of a summer starter at just £17.56.
